Sometimes you need to solder a microcircuit with a large number of legs. To make such an ordinary soldering iron is practically not possible without ruining the track or microcircuit. This operation is usually done using a special hot air gun for soldering or an infrared soldering iron. If you don’t have such equipment at hand, and you really need to urgently repair the device by replacing the microcircuit, then an ordinary halogen lamp that is used in the car will come to your aid.

Yes Yes! Halogen is an excellent source of infrared heat, and directed action.

For soldering, it is better to take a lamp of 55 watts of low beam, and you can have more power, 100 watts. Why is it better to lower? - Because halogen low beam lamps have a mini reflector. In the car, it serves to limit the areas of glow of the lamp, and in our case it will not only protect our eyes, but also reflect useful infrared rays and direct them in the right direction.

Lamp Precautions:
  • - The light of the lamp is very bright, so you can not look at the direct light flux.
  • - Use sunglasses at least during the soldering process.
  • - During operation, the lamp becomes very hot, be careful not to burn yourself.
  • - Even after you turned off the lamp, let it cool for 5-10 minutes, as it is very hot.
  • - Do not touch the lamp glass with your hands. If you accidentally touch - degrease the glass, naturally in the off state. In short, if this is not done during operation, the grease by hand will heat the glass and the lamp will crack.

To power the lamp, it is advisable to use an adjustable power source so that the soldering temperature can be adjusted.

Halogen soldering


The lamp gives good local heating. We turn on the lamp and bring it to the element to be soldered. We are waiting for about 0.5-2 minutes, this should be enough. Then the part easily comes off the surface.

I would not recommend using this method often, since there is a chance of damaging your eyesight, but a one-time use justifies itself.

You can also compress heat-shrinkable tubes with a lamp, but do not touch the insulation with glass.
