Wired connection through a twisted pair cable to home computer networks is still relevant. This cable can connect a router, router and any number of computers in your home. The connection with such a cable is via an RJ45 connector.
This type of connector is a plastic ferrule with connectors for copper wires. Their number can be different - 2.4 or 8. For ease of connection, they all differ in color, and when connected, the masters use a color scheme with the numbering of wires relative to the contacts of the connector.
The RJ45 connector is usually secured with special crimping pliers. However, the tool is not cheap, and it is so rare to use it that the question arises - is it worth buying it at all? Is it possible to crimp a connector with some improvised tool?

What to consider when connecting the RJ45 connector

First you need to figure out what and what you are connecting to. There are two main types of twisted pair connections:
  • Direct (patch cord) - used to connect the home network cable to the router itself, the router, from the router to the computer, laptop or TV;
  • Cross (crossover) - is used to connect the same type of equipment, for example, several computers to each other.

Compress the RJ45 connector with a tool

For work, we need a flat screwdriver, a paint knife and pliers. First of all, take the cable and remove the outer insulation. You can do this with a paint knife, stepping back from the edge of the wire 5-6 centimeters. Try to do this carefully without cutting the insulation of the wires inside the cable.

After releasing the twisted pair contacts, straighten them by hand so that you can select them by the colors for connection.

Now assemble the contacts according to the color scheme, according to your type of connection of the connector.

Straighten them sequentially in the same plane, and trim the edges with side cutters or the cutting part of the pliers. The length of the contacts is usually about 1 cm, and starts from the collar of the connector.

The cable should fit in the connector, and the contacts reach the terminals each in its own groove. To do this, turn the connector face up, and firmly shove the cable into the inside of the connector, observing the sequence of contacts according to the scheme.

After that, we take the pliers, and we press the terminals into the contact housing. Press each of them with a flat screwdriver until the terminals cut through the insulation of the contacts. Through the transparent connector housing, the result of the work can be well seen.

To prevent contact from falling out of the terminals, a special partition is provided on the connector. It acts like a cable clamp, and we also press it with a flat screwdriver.

The rigidity of the landing can be checked by trying to stick the cable out of the connector. If it is well fixed, it will be difficult to do. Our clamp is ready!

So, with a simple hand tool, you can connect the RJ45 connector without the help of specialists.
